EUROPEAN STANDARD EN 50126 establishes a procedure for railway authorities and the railway support sector across the European Union to develop a common approach to the management of reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety, abbreviated as RAMS:
RELIABILITY
Capability to function as intended, without failure, for a specified time interval and under specified conditions.
AVAILABILITY
The ability of an item to be in a position to perform a required function under specified conditions at a specified time or for a specified time interval.
MANTAINABILITY
Ability to retain or restore to a required operational state under certain conditions of use and maintenance.
SAFETY
Absence of unacceptable risks.
This European Standard can be used systematically by a railway authority and the railway support sector to establish railway-specific RAMS requirements at all stages of a railway application's lifetime.
The procedures outlined in this standard are compatible with the implementation of ISO 9000 family of international standards' quality management criteria.
